Which trash bins are suitable for waste separation in the kitchen?

Published on June 24, 2021 from

Not only in Switzerland, but worldwide, one topic is omnipresent: waste separation. Our environment deserves that we avoid waste. Nevertheless, every household produces waste every day. Fortunately, the waste separation system in Switzerland is well thought out and sustainable. There are different waste bins to match this, making it easier to separate waste in the home.

Just a few decades ago, waste separation was a foreign concept. Organic waste, paper, glass, garbage - everything went into the bins and garbage bags together. However, this has changed dramatically. Various garbage bins are available for proper waste separation.

But which trash cans are suitable for waste separation in the kitchen? Which models make sense and where are they best placed? What do you need to consider when it comes to waste separation? Find out more about this topic here, which is so everyday and yet so important.

How do you properly separate waste?

The kitchen is a central place in almost every household. This is where purchases are unpacked and food is stored. The kitchen is a meeting place for family and friends. Cooking, baking, living, playing, laughing together - the kitchen is the heart of the house. And where life is in full swing, packaging and other waste is also generated.

When cooking, vegetable and fruit peels are left behind, and plastic and paper packaging must be disposed of. Empty bottles go from the kitchen counter into the trash can or garbage bag. Newspapers and magazines go into the paper waste. So how do you separate garbage correctly and sensibly? Which garbage cans can be used for this?

Organic waste

Some households have a compost bin in the garden, which makes disposal easy. Organic waste is collected in the trash can in the kitchen. When it is full, its contents go into the compost bin. This creates valuable fertiliser for the garden. If there is no compost available, the waste goes from the trash can in the kitchen into the organic waste bin.

But be careful: Only waste that is actually compostable belongs in the organic waste. Diapers, hygiene products or bones do not belong in the organic waste. Instead, it is, for example, fruit and vegetable scraps, old bread, coffee grounds, flowers, leaves and unpainted wood that go in the organic waste.

Recyclable materials

PET bottles and other recyclable materials are cleaned and placed in a separate waste bin. When possible, they are returned to retailers or collection points - this protects the environment and your wallet.

Garbage

Sensible waste separation has a lot of advantages. Valuable materials can be recycled and the environment is protected in the long term. The waste is separated at home and then, if possible, taken to the Ökihof, in retail stores or to collection points. Other types of waste include:

  • Batteries
  • Construction rubble
  • Glass
  • Green waste
  • Metal
  • PET bottles
  • Bulky waste

Waste management is a big issue in Switzerland, and environmental protection is a top priority. Even with small things in everyday life, everyone can contribute to this important issue. From the right trash can to a house made of straw - sustainability has many faces.

Trash cans and waste separation systems

It wasn't that long ago that the classic trash can was a clearly visible detail in the kitchen. It was usually somewhere in the way or could be found under the sink. Over time, however, the design of the modern kitchen has changed. Functionality and appearance are now on an equal footing. The feel-good factor is the main focus.

The waste separation system is permanently installed in the kitchen. By conveniently opening the drawer pull-out, all the waste bins are visible at a glance and with one hand. Large families plan more space for this, while smaller versions are available for single households or couples. The individual waste bins can be easily removed and emptied. A good waste bin has the following quality features:

  • It is stable and made of high-quality, durable plastic.
  • It has a low weight, so it is still easy to transport when full.
  • It is convenient and easy to clean.
  • It is of course waterproof and corrosion-free.
  • Filling bags or garbage bags can be easily attached.

The drawer system itself must also meet high quality standards. It is used several times a day. When disposing of rubbish, hands are often either wet or full. That is why there are kick systems or "push to open" systems that can be opened without using your hands.

A high-quality automatic stop is a practical solution for convenient and gentle closing. Even if you swing your hips to close it, the drawer does not slam shut with a bang, but closes gently and completely.

Waste separation system as a complete solution

Garbage cans are no longer an unsightly waste of space and a tripping hazard in the kitchen. But which solution makes sense and fits in with the decor?

Everyone answers this question for themselves. Everyday habits, individual lifestyle, daily cleaning routine and much more play a role in the considerations. Do you cook fresh food every day? Then a large amount of organic waste is important. Are there enthusiastic newspaper readers in the house who appreciate the daily reading? This means that a lot of paper waste is generated.

Are there a lot of people in the house? A large garbage bin and recycling bin will meet all challenges. Planning for suitable garbage bins is just as important as planning the dining area, the kitchen unit and the kitchen cabinets.

Benefit from our years of experience in waste separation systems! We have perfected our systems - and continue to work on new innovations. We have made it our mission to make waste separation as practical as possible. Our product configurator makes it easy to find the perfect system. Installation is also simple and is clearly explained in our installation videos.

A modular system creates order

A sensible modular system is the premium solution for every household. No matter how much space is available: with a practical modular system, it is used optimally. For example, organic waste, garbage and recyclable waste can be stored in sufficiently large containers. Storage space for cleaning products and other accessories is also integrated. This creates a micro-eco-farm in the middle of the kitchen, so to speak.

And the best thing is that you can't see any of it. The entire waste management system is located behind a closed drawer. The modular system can be varied depending on requirements, space and the number of people in the household. In this way, it can be adapted to individual needs. It's convenient, easy and requires little effort.

Use existing drawer slides

Whether 17 or 35 litre bags or other common sizes: existing drawer systems can be used to great effect with a clever waste system. Thanks to adjustable ratchets, the drawers are transformed into modern separation systems. The garbage bags are hung in the garbage cans - done. Once you have benefited from a high-quality system, you won't want to be without it.

Several waste bins, additional drip trays and storage space within a drawer - this convenient premium solution is simply brilliant! No more waste bins that take up space in the kitchen. No more mess and chaos under the sink. With a high-quality and well-thought-out waste separation system, sustainability is simply fun.

Systems for revolving doors

Older kitchens and utility rooms in particular often have hinged doors, for example under the sink. These can be opened to the left or right - unlike a drawer that can be pulled out straight. There is a perfect solution here too. The waste bin is mounted in the door and swings out when opened. Different sizes of garbage bags can be hung in it.

There is also a collecting container for coffee capsules or organic waste. The lid of the waste container can be swiveled and used as a storage area. This means that sponges, cleaning cloths, dishwasher tablets, etc. can all find their place. The waste container can be mounted on the left or right - flexibility is guaranteed!

Redesign of the kitchen

Planning a new kitchen is a real El Dorado for creativity. A stylish stove, a high-quality oven, great kitchen furniture - the kitchen has changed over time. It is moving away from being a purely functional space and towards lifestyle and well-being. Planning a new kitchen is fun - and it doesn't automatically have to end with planning the waste system. Quite the opposite!

High-quality and well-thought-out systems make everyday kitchen life a lot easier. Accordingly, careful planning is also important. Where should the accessories be stored? What size containers should they be, and where are smaller collecting or additional containers sufficient? The perfect result means a real relief in the household. And if it looks stylish too – why not!?

Drawer insert for accessories

The devil is often in the details - but we have thought of that too! The most wonderful planning of waste management is of no use if there is no room for dishwasher tablets, sponges, garbage bag rolls, etc. The solution: the drawer insert, which is installed above the garbage cans. Separate compartments ensure order and hygiene. Rinsed, damp dishwashing sponges do not come into contact with freshly washed cloths.

The drawer insert can be pulled out separately. It is easy to clean and use and is available in different versions.

Other systems

Sometimes you don't want or can't have a waste system that's hidden behind a drawer. We have the perfect solution for this case too. Our free-standing systems are a visual highlight and are available in different sizes. This way, you can keep things tidy in storage rooms, utility rooms or garages, for example.

Whether large or small with a swiveling or easy-to-open lid: your waste can be stored quickly and conveniently. Paper waste, glass bottles, garbage from the garage or garden - the areas of application are diverse.

Our POT compost bin guarantees cleanliness and order on the work surface. The lockable bin has an activated carbon filter in the lid to prevent odors. It is equipped with a handle so it can be easily transported and emptied.

The perfect trash can makes everyday life easier

Waste separation is an issue that affects us all. High-quality waste separation systems make waste separation and disposal easier. The perfect solution is available for every household and every given requirement. Existing kitchens can easily be retrofitted with our waste bins. Our waste bins are also the perfect choice when building new kitchens or planning new ones.
