Where to put the trash bin in the kitchen?

Published on April 1, 2022 from

Paper, glasses, plastic packaging: Every day, a lot of waste and waste materials accumulate in the kitchen. If the waste bin is positioned correctly in the kitchen, this makes waste separation easier. But where should the bin be? Find out here how modern and convenient waste separation works with Müllex systems.

Efortless waste separation with the kitchen waste system

Switzerland is the third largest producer of waste in the world. Waste separation therefore plays a particularly important role. On average, each person produces more than 700 kilograms of household waste each year. Extrapolated to the entire population of Switzerland, this amounts to an enormous amount of more than six million tons.

At the same time, Switzerland is also very high on another list. There is no other country that has such a high recycling rate. How is that possible?

This is where proper waste separation comes into play. Waste should be separated and disposed of as carefully as possible in advance. Then as much of it as possible can be reprocessed and recycled.

From the big bin to efficient waste separation

Garbage, food scraps, paper, glass - until a few decades ago, waste separation was nothing more than a vague idea. All kinds of waste ended up completely unsorted in a large garbage bin. This approach was anything but sustainable.

We have various waste separation systems that make disposal very easy. Our range includes the following product lines:

  • X-LINE
  • BOXX-R
  • ZK-BOXX

What goes in which trash can in the kitchen?

The kitchen is often the center of the house or apartment. Let's take a closer look inside. This is where the whole family comes together. They cook and often eat together. The kitchen is also ideal for discussing daily events.

In this place of community and comfort, large amounts of different waste are generated. Bottles and glasses, food packaging and leftover food are just a few examples.

The organic waste

Those who have a garden with compost have it easy. Cooking, plant and garden waste can simply be added to the compost and returned to the natural cycle. This creates fertilizer, which can then be used in the garden.

If there is no compost available, the organic waste bin comes into play. Only put waste in it that is actually compostable, such as:

  • Coffee grounds
  • Plant waste
  • Vegetable and fruit residues
  • Baked goods

Our flexible waste separation systems offer ideal conditions for collecting this waste. You can choose between different container sizes to suit your needs. Features such as a practical clamping system, which helps to optimally secure garbage bags in the container, are also a must. This also makes it very easy to remove full bags.

Added to this is our tried and tested “container-in-container” principle. Even with high frames, i.e. the side walls of your drawer, you can easily access them from above.

The task becomes particularly ergonomic if you place the waste bins in the kitchen as close to your main work area as possible. Ideally, the system is located directly under the worktop. With just one wipe, waste, bowls, etc. end up directly in the waste bin.

What belongs in the yellow and blue bins in the kitchen?

All types of plastic containers are disposed of in the yellow bag. This includes packaging materials, Tetra Paks and bottles of care products, drinks or cleaning products. However, old plastic children's toys have no place in it. DVDs, CDs or old toothbrushes must also not be disposed of in the yellow bag.

The blue bin is used to collect items such as aluminum foil, yogurt lids, cans, and metal packaging for recycling. Depending on the region, small metal items such as nails, screws, and pots can also be put in the blue bin.

Efficient waste separation at home with Müllex

In Switzerland, environmental protection is a top priority. Even small changes in everyday life are enough to get involved. The easiest way is to choose the right waste separation system.

The waste bins don't just have to be practical. Ideally, waste bins can be integrated into the kitchen almost invisibly. Then daily waste separation becomes child's play.

We have designed our waste separation systems to be as practical and discreet as possible. Whether for a new kitchen or integration into existing furniture, we have the right solution.

If you are passionate about cooking with fresh ingredients, you need a lot of space for organic waste. If you can't do without the daily newspaper in the morning, then you probably need storage options for waste paper with a large capacity. If you have a large number of family members, garbage containers with sufficient volume are a good idea.

In order to ensure consistent waste separation in the long term, thorough planning of the waste system is essential. With our product configurator, you can find exactly the waste separation system that best suits your requirements.

X-LINE: Practical, flexible and discreet

Restrained colors, clear shapes and an overall concept that is harmonious across the board - that is our X-LINE. This versatile waste separation system is not only suitable for redesigning the kitchen. It can also be easily and individually integrated into existing drawers with a depth of 40 to 50 centimeters.

Like a construction kit, X-LINE consists of various individual modules in different heights and dimensions. There are also practical additional trays. They provide storage space on the containers for sponges, rags, etc. We have equipped our waste containers with spring-loaded clamping fingers in the corners. This makes hanging up and removing the garbage bags child's play, even when they are full to bursting.

ZK BOXX and BOXX-R: Waste separation systems for existing kitchens and renovations

Whether it's a renovated or unchanged kitchen: our BOXX-R and ZK BOXX systems are extremely flexible. Most kitchens that were planned many years ago are not yet designed to meet the requirements of modern waste separation. Waste has only been actively separated in Switzerland since the 1970s.

With these two systems we have designed flexible solutions that can really be used in any kitchen.

Goodbye free-standing trash cans: Versatile waste separation systems for the kitchen

Our waste separation systems have proven themselves and are nevertheless subject to a constant optimization process. The developers of our products are always up to date. This includes the areas of legislation, material improvements, research and, of course, the wishes of our customers.

As an alternative to the waste separation systems for drawer pulls, we at Müllex offer robust and well-thought-out systems for revolving doors. If you still want or need a free-standing system, we have also developed various solutions for you.

The results speak for themselves. Day after day, the well-thought-out waste systems prove their worth in many Swiss households.
