A waste separation system that suits your collection behavior

Published on August 10, 2021 from

Did you know that the first professional waste separation systems did not exist until the 1970s? Before that, environmental awareness was lower in countries like Switzerland. Accordingly, only simple trash cans were available. The various recyclable materials were simply disposed of together in them.

However, this made correct recycling more difficult. The often bulky metal containers or bag holders also took up a lot of space and were not very hygienic. They usually had to be left outside and were sometimes attacked by animals. This was not an ideal situation for the garbage collectors either.

As environmental awareness grew, Switzerland placed increasing emphasis on correct recycling. We at A. & J. Stöckli AG recognized the gap in the market for good waste separation systems and developed the Müllex waste bin. This was an innovation, because for the first time there was a practical system made of plastic. This was (and is) hygienic, lightweight and visually pleasing.

Why do I need a waste separation system?

How often do you use your waste bin per day? Surveys show that Swiss people throw something away an average of 35 times a day. That's almost 13,000 times they reach for the bin per year. Reason enough to invest in a good everyday helper. Ideally, it should be easy to clean and blend in with the look of your home.

A suitable waste separation system helps you to separate recyclable materials from one another in a very simple way. The Müllex waste system offers space for several garbage bags in a container with several compartments. This means you only need one storage location and always have the same route to the garbage can.

In addition, you need a waste separation system to comply with Switzerland's recycling guidelines. In the spirit of the circular economy, recyclable materials should not be destroyed. On the contrary: Ideally, they should be reintroduced into the recycling cycle. This is easily possible with plastic, paper, glass and compost. In this way, we protect the environment and use our resources sustainably and responsibly.

If you separate your waste, you are preparing optimally for collection and subsequent recycling. This can be done in one go, but is often complicated with different waste bins and systems. A clear waste separation system, on the other hand, allows waste to be separated correctly. In this way, you are making an important contribution to the circular economy and protecting the environment.

How does waste separation work in Switzerland?

In order to separate waste correctly, you should familiarize yourself with the regulations in your canton. These vary slightly depending on the region, but the principle behind them is always the same. The recyclable materials are separated according to type and disposed of separately. There are the following categories:

  • Garbage (usually a blue bag)
  • Plastic (usually a yellow bag)
  • Green waste (usually a green bag)
  • Aluminium (grey bag) Glass (purple container)
  • Paper and cardboard (brown paper bag)

Ideally, the bags or sacks you use for disposal are also reusable. This means that they are recycled together with the garbage and reintroduced into the cycle of resources. Most garbage bags are collected by the garbage collectors once a week and recycled accordingly.

You can take recyclable materials such as bulky waste, old electrical appliances or other raw materials that do not belong to the above categories to the recycling center. You can find out online where the nearest center is near you. You can take the waste there or arrange for it to be picked up for a fee.

Depending on the type of items, you will have to pay a fee for disposal. You can obtain further information from your local authority.

What can go into the compost?

A particularly large number of disposal errors occur in the area of compost. At the same time, these are recyclable materials that are very valuable. That is why we are now addressing the question of what belongs in the compost. Basically, this is the right place for organic waste. However, it must rot as desired without releasing harmful substances.

This means that plastic, metal, stone and clay are not allowed on the compost. The following products, however, are suitable for the green bag or for your own compost heap:

  • Garden waste such as herbs, grass clippings, small tree cuttings
  • Kitchen waste such as fruit and vegetables, tea bags, coffee grounds, crushed eggshells and shells from organic tropical fruits
  • Small animal droppings (in small quantities)
  • Poisonous plants
  • Crushed cardboard
  • Newspaper

All of these materials rot and form fertile compost within a very short time. If you wish, you can use it to fertilize your own garden. This saves the garbage collectors work and contributes to the circular economy at home. You are also doing your plants a great favor with the high-quality compost.

However, please note that plant remains such as weed seeds and diseased plants should not end up in the compost. They can cause damage there. So if you are unsure, it is best to choose the organic waste bin instead of compost. Ash should only be composted in small quantities and if the origin is known in order to avoid an oversupply of nutrients.

What shouldn't go into the compost?

Even organic substances do not always belong in the compost. For example, barbecue charcoal is a product that only belongs in organic waste under certain conditions. To do so, the charcoal must be free of heavy metals, contain no alcohol and have not come into contact with fat or oil. If you are unsure, it is better to use normal garbage to dispose of cold charcoal.

Leftover food should not be put in the compost either. Cooked, fried and other animal leftovers attract rats and other vermin. This applies both to storing them outside and to using them in the garden. Dry bread, on the other hand, can be put in the compost in small amounts. You should avoid fat and oil.

Pet excrement is another valuable material that only belongs in the compost in small quantities. It is better to choose normal waste. This also applies to cat litter, which is actually compostable. You should dispose of dog excrement immediately after walking the dog. The ban on composting is explained by the fact that the excrement of carnivores often contains worms, parasites or drug residues.

One final rule of thumb applies to cut flowers, which surprises many people. Purchased cut flowers do not belong in the compost. This is because they are often contaminated with pesticides. Only bouquets picked from your own garden belong in the compost. Whenever you are unsure, the garbage is the best choice.

How do I recognize a good waste separation system>

To make it easier for you to separate compost, paper, plastic, glass and other recyclables, a waste separation system is recommended. These practical containers have several compartments or buckets. Depending on the system, you can open the bin by kicking, pressing or by hand. A good container fits your needs exactly.

The hygiene of waste separation systems is also very important. The products should be easy to clean. That's why plastic is the best material. It repels germs and contaminants, and you can simply wipe it clean with a damp cloth. Plastic is also robust and very durable.

Before you buy, think about how many compartments you want for waste separation. In many households, residual waste, plastic and paper waste are important categories. Compost is another issue. If you don't have a compost bin in your garden, a corresponding container in the waste separation system can be useful.

The look also plays a role when choosing your new waste separation system. Choose a variant that goes well with the colors in your kitchen or household room. Darker colors such as gray and black are ideal as they are less susceptible to stains and dirt. They also look elegant.

What are the reasons for using Müllex?

We have been working for decades to make it easier for Swiss households to dispose of everyday waste. That's why we started a new era with the Müllex brand in the 1980s. We developed the first waste bin that was neither bulky nor impractical.

Instead, the Müllex waste separation system is an intelligent system for kitchen waste that solves problems instead of creating new ones. It is made of plastic and allows the bag to be easily clamped in place. The bag does not tear because there is no unnecessary tension. The Müllex also easily fits under the kitchen sink.

We have been offering the Müllex waste system for Swiss kitchens since 1982. The practical waste bin is now available all over the world. It helps to implement recycling and sustainability in your own home. We attach great importance to continuous product development to make this easier for you.

You can configure the Müllex according to your needs. Whether it is for drawer pull-outs, revolving doors or a free system: we offer you a suitable solution. This enables us to meet changing customer needs and make residual waste disposal easier.

Another good reason for Müllex is that the waste separation system is manufactured in Switzerland. It is of high quality, which our customers really appreciate. We produce at the foot of the Wiggis, which keeps transport distances short. We also live by values such as sustainability and environmental friendliness in the way we run our company.

Which Müllex is best for me?

We offer you many different versions of the Müllex. The X-LINE is particularly popular. It allows you to easily clamp the garbage bag in. The garbage container fits into all standard pull-out drawers. It has space for up to eight containers, which means it can hold 35 liters of garbage. Our 60 solution offers up to 31 percent more storage space in the drawer.

The BOXX-R series is ideal for kitchen renovations. Thanks to the pull-out, this version fits into any kitchen, so it can also come with you when you move house. You also get a lot of space for waste. The pull-out floor works very quietly thanks to a high-quality roller slide and can hold up to 100 kilograms. The storage drawer offers space for kitchen utensils.

Another option is the ZK BOXX waste system for existing drawer pulls. It offers excellent support thanks to insert trays and a hinged crown for bag tensioning. You can dispose of organic waste, coffee capsules or batteries in additional containers. You also have space for utensils such as cleaning cloths, sponges or dishwasher tablets.
